Documentary film making lacks genuine reasons: Noel Burch

The noted film theorist and documentarian Noel Burch said that a genuine reason for making a documentary film lacks at present. He was talking at the ‘in conversation’ programme with film critic CS Venkiteshwaran at Nila Theater, conducted as a part of sixth IDSFFK.
Noel Burch admitted that he has corrected himself several times instead of sticking to what he said earlier. He added that admitting your own faults doesn’t make you inferior to others. Burch reminded that relation between a theorist and a film maker is a complex issue. In reply to the question about his theories, he said “my theories are good enough to be considered as study materials”. While expressing his views on the digitalization of cinema, he said that analog to digital transformation of cinema is killing itself.
According to Burch, new wave movement is the prime reason for the degradation of French cinema. Adding to this, he said that internet is highly influencing the audience in film viewing.  “Although Indian filmmakers are focused on their work, most of the themes are need based while Hollywood films are giving more importance to directors view point”, Burch was quoted while asked about his perception about Indian documentaries.
